As the Illinois Department of Natural Resources considers approval of the first state-owned off-highway-vehicle park, opposition has been swift, passionate and ill informed.

The AMA hopes you will help counter that opposition with a well reasoned, fact-based response.

Supporters of the proposed OHV park should email the DNR and elected officials in the area of the Buckhorn Unit of Siloam Springs State Park with productive, positive, respectful comments.

Your help is critical.

When Illinois DNR created a $10 to $15 off-highway-vehicle registration program to support a state-owned OHV park, AMA District 17 and ABATE of Illinois negotiated a delay in the fee's
collection until real progress is made on establishing a park. All interested parties were asked to delay publicizing research on the conceptual plan until it was formally announced and research into its feasibility well under way.
The AMA and ABATE honored that request. But the deer hunters and preservationist communities who became aware of the conceptual plan energized their members to actively oppose the proposed park as if it was a certainty.
A Jan. 30 CapitolFaX.com article Click Here! provides some insight on the current type of misinformation flowing from the opposition. As interesting as the article is, the comments below it from readers are even more valuable.
The AMA is encouraged that DNR Director Wayne Rosenthal is anxious to hear the full spectrum of pro-OHV opinions, we are hopeful you will provide yours.
Comments should focus on the demand for a state-owned park, the fact that you would use one in Brown County, your estimate of the money you typically spend on fuel, food, supplies and lodging/camping when you go riding.
Also let the officials know if you are currently spending that money out-of-state.

Deadline: AMA and ABATE will be meeting with the DNR director in the coming weeks. His having your email in hand at that meeting would be ideal. Don’t worry if you can’t be that quick though.
No decision will be made until the spring, so every email will count.
